Water safety not just for the young

You’re never too old to learn how to be safe in the water – just ask the newest graduates of Hume’s Active Ageing Grey Medallion program.

Adults over the age of 65 feature prominently in the statistics for drowning and near-drowning incidents in Victoria.

To help curb this trend, Life Saving Victoria and Hume council have set up the Grey Medallion program at Sunbury Aquatic and Leisure Centre over the past six weeks.

The Royal Life Saving Society Australia program targets the ‘grey power’ of people aged 60 and more, teaching water safety and lifesaving skills.

Last week, 26 participants completed their final session, and were presented certificates and medallions by Hume mayor Drew Jessop.

“People who swim and know what to do in an emergency can not only save their own life, but save the lives of others,” Cr Jessop said.

“Swimming is a vital skill to have. We strongly recommend all children and adults learn and practice this.”
