Organisers hope that people will replace the hum and glow of electronic devices with the huff and puff of steam engines, if only for a day, at the Gisborne Vintage Machinery Society’s annual rally this Sunday.
President Tim Reid says the return of the club’s lovingly restored steam locomotive, Perry, will be a highlight of the family day, which also features a tractor pull, animal farm, mini-train and, weather permitting, camel rides.
Car, truck and machinery displays will also take people back to simpler times.
‘‘These are the days, when you started work you couldn’t just turn a key,’’ Mr Reid says. ‘‘Instead, you lit and stoked a fire for hours before the engine came to life.’’
The rally is at Steam Park in Webb Crescent, New Gisborne, from 9.30am-3pm. Tickets: $10 adults, children free.
