Unlocking your street’s history

By Jessica Micallef

Sunbury residents will soon be able to know the history of street names across the town.

Hume council will install historical street signage across the municipality, including Sunbury.

The new signs will incorporate the street name and a sentence about who or what the street is named after.

At last week’s Hume council meeting, Cr Ann Potter said the historical street signs would be a great way for residents to learn about the past of their hometown.

“Years ago, I was sent a document that outlined the background to various streets in Sunbury and why they were named and it was absolutely fascinating,” she said.

“I think it would be great for our community to actually see signs up there, understanding why Evans Street is called Evans Street.

“There are so many historical street names in Sunbury and it would be great for the community to understand the reason why they’re named.

“I look forward to seeing the signs up on various street poles in the near future.”

The historical signs will be located at both ends of a street.

Cr Potter said council officers would contact historical societies throughout Hume, inviting them to submit requests for the historical information and which streets they think should have the new signs.

All proposed historical signs will be presented to the council for approval.
