Families in Roxburgh Park and Sunbury will be able to reel in some monster catches this spring, with both Roxburgh Park Lakes and Spavin Drive Lake stocked with huge rainbow trout as part of a statewide program.
Outdoor Recreation Minister Steve Dimopoulos confirmed the annual stocking of 1000 “stonker” rainbow trout across 17 metropolitan lakes on Tuesday, August 26, just in time for the warmer months.
Each fish weighs up to four kilograms, giving local anglers a chance at the same prized trout usually released into regional fishing hotspots like Eildon Pondage and the Goulburn River.
Roxburgh Park Lakes and Spavin Drive Lake in Sunbury have each received 30 of the massive trout, making them top spots for local families looking to cast a line without leaving their own neighbourhood.
Both lakes offer prime access, with walking tracks, playgrounds and barbecue areas nearby – making them ideal for a full day out.
“These stocking programs are all about creating fun, affordable activities for families,” Mr Dimopoulos said.
“Our nation-leading fish stocking program is another reason for anglers big and small to enjoy the great outdoors, while supporting local businesses.”
The initiative is part of the state government’s $96 million package to improve fishing, boating, piers and aquaculture. Victoria now stocks more fish than all other states and territories combined, giving metropolitan residents the same access to trophy-sized trout regional fishers enjoy each September.
In addition to Roxburgh Park and Sunbury, other lakes stocked include Albert Park Lake, Yarrambat Lake, Lilydale Lake and Karkarook Lake in Moorabbin.
For those keen to travel further afield, the trout fishing season in rivers reopens on Saturday, September 6, marked by the Goulburn Fishing Festival at Eildon and the Ballarat Fishing Festival at Lake Wendouree. Both events feature children’s fishing clinics, fish releases and family-friendly entertainment.
For now, locals in Melbourne’s north have good reason to dust off their rods – with big fishing thrills waiting close to home.
