Tributes for cricket stalwart Bernie Moynahan

Tributes are flowing for the much-loved vice-president of the Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club, Bernie Moynahan, who died last week.

Mr Moynahan died last Tuesday while visiting Russia to support the Socceroos during the World Cup.

Mr Moynahan contracted pneumonia while he was overseas. He slipped into a coma and contracted septicaemia after being admitted to a Russian hospital.

After Mr Moynahan’s death, the Victorian Turf Cricket Association issued a statement about his long service to their organisation.

VTCA president Steve McNamara said Mr Moynahan represented Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club as a VTCA club delegate for almost 20 years.

Mr Moynahan was a life member at Hoppers Crossing club and its vice president. He played almost 400 games with the club.

Mr McNamara described Mr Moynahan as “a club legend, an association stalwart who loved the chance to have a chat and a beer with anyone who would pull up a chair”.

“Having known Bernie for 20-odd years, I can attest that he was a gentleman, a lovable rogue,” Mr McNamara said. “He possessed a natural humour behind a quiet exterior.”

He said Mr Moynahan would be sadly missed.

The Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club posted a tribute to Mr Moynahan on its Facebook page last week.

“At the moment there are no words, only real heartbreak,” it stated.

“Our thoughts are with his (Mr Moynahan’s) family and close friends during this time.”
