Salesian College students took part in National Schools Tree Day by planting 500 native species at the Nook in Sunbury on Friday, organised by the Gap Road level crossing removal team.

It is the country’s largest tree-planting and nature care event, and Salesian students in years 11 and 12 studying Sacred Earth students and Environmental Science, as well as landscapers from HL Landscaping, planted native species in a designated area.

Every year about 300,000 people volunteer their time to get into environmental activities educating Australians about the world around them.

The day began with a safety briefing, an introduction to the Gap Road level crossing removal project and a tree planting demonstration.

Sunbury MP Josh Bull said the level crossing removal in Sunbury will “change Sunbury for the better”.

“It’s great to see students from Salesian College and members of the project team getting together to plant trees, helping make our community greener,” Mr Bull said.
