Tree planting a fitting tribute to Kyneton doctor

The family of a doctor who began practising in Kyneton in the 1970s will maintain a strong connection to the town after going online to donate trees for the district hospital’s new contemplative garden.

Other people are being encouraged to join members of Dr Andrew Shipley’s family, who will take part in a planting day this Sunday from 2.30-4.30pm.

Siblings Janet, Michael and Alison saw the chance to donate trees as a fitting way to honour their father, who died in 2008 after more than 30 years of medical service. The trio have happy memories of joining Dr Shipley on rounds and having fun at hospital Christmas parties.

‘‘A lot of local people still remember Dad well and speak fondly of him,’’ Janet says.

‘‘These trees will be a nice way to remember him and involve the grandkids he didn’t get to meet.’’

The garden, designed by landscape architect Jim Sinatra, will feature pin oak and eucalyptus trees and provide a relaxing place for patients, staff and visitors to take time out.

Kyneton District Health is still taking donations. Trees cost $60 for businesses; $40 for individuals and families. For more details, visit www.kynetonhealth.org.au
