Toasting 40 years

The Sunbury and Macedon Ranges Toastmasters is having a big birthday party on Saturday, and why wouldn’t they? They’ve turned 40, after all.

Technically, 42, since they started in 1970, but COVID-19 got in the way of previous celebrations.

Toastmasters exist all over the world promoting communication and public speaking, to foster confidence and leadership skills.

The organisation’s vice president of public relations Julie Wacker said the Toastmasters had a “huge impact” in the community, and couldn’t wait for the day.

“We will have authors who are doing speeches or presentations about what brought them to Toastmasters and how Toastmasters helped them with publishing their books or presenting their books,” Ms Wacker said.

Even the winner of the 2021 International Speech contest, Verity Price, will zoom in from South Africa to join the festivities on May 28.

The event will run from 10am to 5pm at the Sunbury Senior Citizens Centre, and they want the whole community to feel welcome.

Ms Wacker said since the Toastmasters began in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges, which used to be separate, many people have come through its doors to learn tricks of the talking trade.

“They often stay for the socialising interactions with their new found friends and with all the other activities going around in Toastmasters,” Ms Wacker said.
