Sunbury local, the late Pearl Iris Potts, will have a lasting legacy after Hume council approved the name ‘Pearl Iris Park’ for a new reserve in the Rosenthal estate
During a meeting on June 13, council adopted the naming proposal for the park at 38 Bushranger Drive, Sunbury, following positive community feedback.
Councillors Jarrod Bell, Jack Medcraft and Chris Hollow all spoke in favour of the naming proposal.
Cr Medcraft said the community support shows how highly Mrs Potts was regarded in the Sunbury community.
“I think it’s right and fitting that we look back [at] what she’s achieved and how she’s been part of Sunbury and put that in memoriam forever,” Cr Medcraft said.
“The number of people who supported this recommendation is fantastic and just goes to show how highly she was regarded.”
Cr Bell agreed and said the naming of the reserve is something future generations can be proud of.
“The story of Pearl can be not only remembered in her name but on those signs that tell that contribution to our community moving forward,” Cr Bell said.
As a resident of Sunbury for almost 70 years, Mrs Potts worked as a nurse at the Sunbury Mental Asylum, volunteered and was a valued and respected member of Sunbury.
Mrs Potts married her husband Robert Potts in 1939 and the couple raised eight children.
Following council’s endorsement of the name, it will be submitted to the Registrar of Geographic Names for consideration and approval.
