Increasing numbers of people are prepared to give up Saturday morning sleep-ins to join in a timed five-kilometre run.

Parkrun event director Sue Maric and six ‘run directors’ organise a group of about 70 runners every Saturday from 8am for a race around Craigieburn Lake.

Maryanne Bossen, a run director, has been involved since parkrun started in Craigieburn two years ago. She says one of the main attractions, for her, is the event’s inclusiveness.

“It’s for all fitness levels and all ages. I get up, rain, hail or shine, because parkrun is more than just a run for me.

It’s the supportive, encouraging community feeling that I love.

The inclusiveness, the families, friends, the high-fives.”

Parkrun began in the United Kingdom 11 years ago and is now held in parks around the world.
