This year’s Diwali celebration in Bulla will shine a light on community, diversity, friendship and coming together after the last, strange few years.

The glorious Indian festival of lights is being hosted by the Multicultural Resources Hub (MCR Hub) and community development advisor Shammi Parekh can’t wait.

“We want to take a moment. We’ll light up a candle, together, to celebrate the strength and this is the strength of coming out of darkness and moving towards a better tomorrow.”

This year’s October 30 event is called the Neighbourhood Meet and Greet, aimed at fostering connectedness.

“We feel it’s a really good time to engage the community with an event full of light… It’s going to be held at the Black Horse Hotel in Bulla, as they were kind enough to provide the venue,” Ms Parekh said.

This is the second time the MCR Hub has been able to hold the festival in person since they first decided to bring Diwali to the Sunbury region.

While this year’s event will be modest due to capacity restrictions, Ms Parekh said it will help them prepare for what will be a large event in 2023.

“Diwali this year is all about connecting communities together through multicultural programs, acknowledging community members who have supported our community through the pandemic, and of course, lovely sweets and sparkles,” she said.

“I feel that the program is based on the words meet and greet – introducing [more] culture into Sunbury.

“It’s a very multicultural community and we want to embrace that with the community, for them to enjoy something different.”
