Macedon Ranges Telstra customers will experience temporary service disruptions from May 22 as it upgrades its mobile base station on Mount Macedon.

Telstra announced on May 10 the disruptions will take place following a full site shutdown for the major work required, which is aimed to be completed by May 26.

Services in some parts of Mount Macedon, Woodend, Newham, Tylden and Carlsruhe will be impacted while Telstra upgrades 4G services and brings new 5G coverage.

Telstra regional general manager Steve Tinker said while there is never a good time for service disruptions, the upgrades are required.

“The service disruption is required to perform the significant work… [for] the new technology and speed and capacity to Mount Macedon and the surrounding area,” Mr Tinker said.

“We want to keep the amount of time the site is off air to an absolute minimum, and give the community as much time as possible to plan for the disruption.”

Telstra said its mobile customers may start receiving text messages advising them of the upcoming service disruption, while landline services, NBN internet services and mobile coverage from other providers will not be impacted.

Triple-0 calls from a Telstra mobile, when the site is off air, will automatically be diverted to any working mobile network for connection to emergency services.
