Swim in safe waters

Another round of Hume’s Active Ageing Grey Medallion program starts this week.

Sunbury residents aged 65 and more can join in the free six-week program and learn to swim and stay safe in the water.

Older people feature prominently in the statistics for drowning and near-drowning incidents in Victoria.

To help curb this trend, Life Saving Victoria and Hume council set up the Grey Medallion program at Sunbury Aquatic and Leisure Centre.

The Royal Life Saving Society Australia program helps people in the older age brackets, teaching them water safety and lifesaving skills, and to learn their limits.

The latest group of graduates received their certificates and medallions from Hume mayor Drew Jessop recently.

“People who swim and know what to do in an emergency can not only save their own life, but save the lives of others,” Cr Jessop said.

“Swimming is a vital skill to have. We strongly recommend all children and adults learn and practice this.”

Registrations for the next program should be lodged by this Friday, February 25.
