A new award to recognise young Macedon Ranges women in the creative arts industry has been launched.

The Zonta Club of Kyneton is a not-for-profit organisation that supports women in the local area.

The club is now in it’s 26th year and service committee member Philippa Close said they wanted to begin recognising young women in the arts.

“We are launching an award for the creative arts – the arts achievement award – and it is opened to young woman aged between 16 and 19, enrolled in secondary studies in a creative subject and they must be a resident of the Macedon Ranges,” she said.

“The award is for women in the performing arts and visual arts industry so drama, dance, singing, media and visual communications.”

Ms Close said the new award was to encourage young women to develop and explore the opportunities in the arts industry after noticing the a gap in the club’s previous awards.

“We offer school awards … an education and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) award, a VCAL award and a sports award,” she said.

“The arts achievement award is $400, which will help the winner to continue with their secondary school and to help provide for future opportunities.”

Applications for the award are open until April 26.
