Sunbury walks for carers

The information session will be held on February 22 (supplied).

Sunbury Neighbourhood House will be holding an information session on the Walks for Carers program which will be coming to Sunbury.

The session will be held at Sunbury Neighbourhood House (SNH) on February 22, 10am to 12 noon, and morning tea will be provided.

Neighbourhood Houses Victoria project co-ordinator Michelle Willoughby said the Walks for Carers program is for unpaid carers of a loved one, person with a disability, mental illness or aged person.

“This came about because of a need from local parents… who were supporting each other informally, we wanted to put that in the Walks for Carers model,” she said.

“The program is statewide, we’re establishing them in as many neighbourhood houses and centres as we can where there’s need.”

With 420 neighbourhood houses and centres in the state, Ms Willoughby said her goal is to get as many up and running as possible.

“The main goals of the group is social connection, improved wellbeing through exercise and community inclusion.

“It can be really isolating being a carer.”

Moving forward, Ms Willoughby said there will be once a month catch ups but the exact dates are still to be confirmed.

“It’s free to join and hopefully links those careers into SHN so they can access the other programs on offer,” she said.

Residents can contact the neighbourhood with questions: enquiries@sunburyhouse.com.au or (03) 9740 6978.
