A $45 million development in Sunbury has been welcomed with open arms by Hume council.
The council unanimously voted to grant a planning permit for the project at 790 Sunbury Road, which will include a hotel, group accommodation, a restaurant, function centre and winery.
Speaking at last week’s Hume council meeting, councillor Jack Medcraft said the plans for Goona Warra Vineyard would positively “change the whole face of Sunbury”.
“This is probably the most exciting thing to happen in Sunbury since the rock festival and the Ashes,” Cr Medcraft said.
The council approved repairing and refurbishing the site’s heritage-listed homestead and winery. Liquor licences were also granted.
Four objections were submitted.
When the planning proposal was released to the public in June, resident John Callaghan expressed concern to
Star Weekly that the proposed “massive overdevelopment” would “impact on the actual vista of the area”.
He had said residents would do whatever they could to stop the development.
Cr Medcraft told the council meeting he thought “everybody in Sunbury should embrace” the new development.
“Sunbury is no longer that little township,” Cr Medcraft said.
