Sunbury’s sports community is thrilled upgrades to their home grounds at John McMahon Reserve are on track to go ahead.
Hume council last week endorsed the masterplan for the reserve in response to calls from clubs and community groups for it to be upgraded, part of $8 million of works in the region.
Draft plans for John McMahon Reserve, as well as Craigieburn’s DS Aitken Reserve and Westmeadows’ Willowbrook Reserve, will be open for public feedback from October 25.
As part of the plan, East Sunbury’s John McMahon Reserve will get a second oval, netball courts, a playground and change rooms, as well as extended club rooms, at a cost of more than $3.9 million.
The reserve is home to East Sunbury football, netball, cricket and softball clubs.
“Exciting times ahead for the East Sunbury Sporting Community,” East Sunbury Cricket Club said in an online statement.
“We hope the updated report will be adopted by council and then we will petition them over the following years to get everything on the plan done.
“The future is ours Thunders!!”
Cr Jack Ogilvie said the upgrades had been almost 15 years in the planning.
“This has been one of my pet projects since 2002,” he said. “In the future, [the reserve] is going to be a lot better. This plan will take the reserve to a new level.”
He is certain the upgrade will mean women’s football will be played at East Sunbury in the coming years.
The plans will be out for public feedback until November 21.
