Parents, students, teams and individuals are being urged to sign up for a free ‘walking basketball’ program being rolled out in Sunbury.

Basketball Victoria, with support from VicHealth, has selected Sunbury for the first trial of the low-impact, joint-friendly game.

Sunbury Basketball Association junior development officer Chris Tighe says walking basketball will be a great way to help people reach the recommended 10,000 steps every day they need to maintain fitness.

‘‘It’s basically basketball without the running,’’ Tighe says. ‘‘It’s great in that it’s for all ages and fitness levels.

“It’s just a great way to get moving.’’

Tighe says the new game is also likely to be welcomed by people coming back from injury.

‘‘I know myself, I did an ACL, and I would have much preferred to have had this rather than being restricted to working on the upper body.’’

Games will be played weekly.
