A traffic blitz is urgently needed in Sunbury to remove hoons from the town’s roads, according to two Hume councillors.
Councillors Jack Medcraft and Ann Potter raised a motion at the June 12 council meeting calling for Fawkner Highway Patrol to conduct a blitz in Sunbury.
Cr Medcraft said the town had a growing hoon problem that needed to be addressed.
“We have had a number of issues and residents complaining about hoon behaviour, especially at night,” Cr Medcraft said. “There was a blitz in Campbellfield, but all we have done is move them on from Campbellfield to Sunbury.”
Cr Medcraft said he raised the issue after a resident sent him footage of a hoon performing burnouts on a Sunbury street.
He said residents in the Ashfield Estate regularly complained about hoon activity along Mitchells Lanes and Charter Road, with Wildwood Road and Goonawarra also regularly targeted.
“The last thing you want is some idiot doing burnouts outside your house,” Cr Medcraft said.
Cr Potter said she often heard hoons in her neighbourhood. Speaking at the council meeting, Cr Potter said she was in her back yard about 2.30pm on June 12 when she heard the screaching and roaring of cars.
“I was just waiting for that bang to happen,” she said. “Luckily, it didn’t, but it is really becoming plague proportions at the moment.
“The noises I heard today, given they were in close proximity to Sunbury Downs [College] and Sunbury Heights [Primary School], really had me scared.”
Sunbury MP Josh Bull said he had raised the issue with Police Minister Lisa Neville.
“Hoon driving is irresponsible and dangerous, and I always encourage residents to contact police if they observe dangerous driving on our roads,” he said.
