What’s your connection to Sunbury?

I do feel connected with Sunbury, having been a councillor on the previous Shire of Bulla. I help put in place the long-term forward plans for the orderly development of the town, as well as securing key facilities for the town, such as the Sunbury Aquatic Centre.

However, my connection goes back even further – Sue (my wife) and I attended the Sunbury rock concerts back in the early ’70s. I can still see Billy Thorpe on stage.

How long have you lived in the area?

My wife Sue and I have lived in Sunbury for over 43 years.

Tell us a bit about your background.

I attended Monash Uni back in the early ’70s and had an interesting and rewarding career with the state government where I feel I made a real difference managing various government programs and initiatives.

What are you passionate about?

I am passionate about good forward planning, working with community teams which are outcome-focused. I’m also passionate about keeping fit through cycling, tennis and staying engaged with my community. This all came together recently when as a team we finally achieved the completion of the Vineyard Road shared pathway to and over the Calder Freeway which, due to earlier planning, came to an abrupt end at Moore Road.

What’s your philosophy on life?

My philosophy can be best summed up by the following short saying: “I’d rather wear out than rust out.”

You are taking part in the Parkinson’s Walk in the Park event later this year. How long have you had Parkinson’s?

I was diagnosed in October, 2006. While a tough call, I feel fortunate that I have been able to take actions to effectively manage my symptoms, including deep brain stimulation surgery as well as test and use of Australian- and overseas-developed leading-edge disease managing devices.

What’s something people don’t know about you?

One thing some may not know – I am also a coeliac.

What do you love about Sunbury?

I really enjoy coffee with friends in the town centre. When I talk to friends from outside Sunbury, they often refer to Sunbury as being the best kept secret in Melbourne, which is true.

What’s your vision for Sunbury?

I’d like Hume council to address the growing concerns for the safety of cyclists at the new key Elizabeth Drive/ Mitchells Lane roundabout by constructing an off-road left-hand cyclists lane.
