Parking spaces in residential streets could be opened up for commuter parking under a new plan to address parking shortages.
Hume council’s draft parking restrictions policy will look at the use of parking spaces in residential streets near Sunbury train station to see if there is a possibility they can be used by commuters.
Under the policy, parking restrictions could be changed with the aim of having “parking occupancy for residential areas at a maximum 70 per cent of capacity” during the day.
The residential areas adjacent to the station currently have parking limits of four hours, meaning those taking the train to work cannot park there.
According to a report tabled at Hume council’s last meeting, carparks at the station fill quickly and commuters are being forced to park up to a kilometre or more away from the station.
The report noted that many resident vehicles were not parked in the streets during work hours.
The council said it would not make any changes to parking restrictions without consulting property owners and occupiers. Feedback on the draft policy is being sought from May 21 to June 18.
The state government last month announced it would construct 300 new carparks for Sunbury station, starting in 2019.
