Students wheel out the fun

Macedon Primary School pupils are looking forward to having a wheely good time.

The school will take part in National Ride2School Day on March 19 as part of the Ride2School program which aims to help children take part in up to 60 minutes of daily exercise.

Physical education teacher David Oxworth said the school had been taking part in the annual event for at least 12 years.

“Leading up to the day, we have posters around the school, we talk about it in the newsletter and assembly. We promote the day as much as possible,” he said.

“We talk about why we do Ride2School Day and what are the benefits because many students ride their bike or scoot on that day, and we talk about how they might do it if they live a bit far away.”

Mr Oxworth said up to 40 pupils regularly walk, ride or scoot to school each day, depending on the weather.

“There are many benefits about riding to school. Students keep active, we have less traffic around the school and it promotes independence in students.

“My advice to a parent or student thinking about riding to school for the fist time was to make sure you have tried a trusted route to school. Perhaps try to get together with other students or families to ride to school.”
