Social housing gets tick of approval

Macedon Ranges council has agreed to lease 3 to 5 Noel Street to Wintringham Housing Limited for social housing development.

In a meeting on Wednesday, April 26, council voted to authorise the proposed 20 year lease, which will charge Wintringham $1 per annum for the whole of the lease if requested.

Mayor Annette Death spoke on the proposal at the meeting and thanked everyone for their involvement and work in making the project possible.

“In particular, I’d like to thank the Lancefield Romsey Lions Club for the work in this space, [for] being part of the community and [having] those conversations with the community and council staff,” Cr Death said.

“This is a great collaboration with the community and with council staff.”

“It will be good to see this come to fruition and I just want to thank everyone for taking the time to make it possible.”

The lease will see Wintringham Housing be responsible for all outgoings, services and maintenance, and all improvements will be owned by them.

This decision comes after Macedon Ranges received a significant investment from the state government under the Big Housing Build initiative.

Homes Victoria announced the initiative would receive $5.3 billion in funding to provide 12,000 new homes across the state.

Wintringham Housing was advised in late 2022 that it had successfully obtained funding for the redevelopment of the units in Lancefield, as the council is not a registered housing provider.

The development will see the five existing units on the land be demolished and 12 social housing units be built.
