Our Lady of Mount Carmel Primary School pupil Katie Warburton was the top of her class.
Katie was awarded a 2019 Hume council education scholarship fund that assists with the costs involved when starting secondary education.
The year 6 pupil said she was proud of her achievement.
“I feel accomplished because I never expected it … I feel happy about it,” Katie said.
“The scholarship is really helpful because my mum has MS and my dad is a carer for her and it’s really helpful for them.”
She said she was looking forward to starting secondary school at Salesian College in Sunbury.
School principal Julie Freeman said Katie was “a real standout” recipient.
“She’s had a lot go on in her life and she comes to school every day with this beautiful big smile … she just fully commits to her friends and the school,” Ms Freeman said.
“She really epitomises our three R’s of respect, responsibility and resilience.”
The scholarships can be used to fund uniforms, books, school fees and excursions.
