The Salesian College community has a whole year of celebrating ahead of it as the school marks 90 years in Sunbury.
The college kicked off its commemorations last Tuesday at a flag raising ceremony with students and teachers. Other activities have been planned for throughout the year.
The Salesians of Don Bosco originally bought Rupertswood, one of Victoria’s largest private houses, built for Australian-born baronet Sir William Clarke, in 1927.
It was first used as an orphanage, then in 1929, classes began in the mansion when a boarding and day school for boys was established.
The school became a co-educational college in 1992, reflecting the needs of Sunbury’s growing community.
Principal Mark Brockhus said Salesian College would commemorate its 90th milestone by looking to its future.
“This birthday gives us the opportunity to reflect on our history and acknowledge current and past teachers and students, and showcase just how far we have come and grown since this time,” Mr Brockhus said.
“Since our humble beginnings, the school has changed immensely.
“We now have more than 1200 students, and the culture, activities and curriculum make us a leader in our field.
“It is wonderful to be celebrating nine decades of education,” he said.
“We look forward to a future of providing the highest education.”
He thanked past and present students, staff, and all who have taken care of “this great old school of ours”.
“Our greatest strength is, and has always been, our people,” Mr Brockhus said.
“We are immensely proud of this milestone. Just think of the number of scientists, artists, chefs, accountants and other careers we have developed from these very doors.
“We will focus on the opportunities and challenges we can provide our students.”
