Construction of a new roundabout at the Barry and Main street intersection in Romsey has been completed.

The roundabout was constructed with bluestone features and powerlines were relocated underground to enhance the community’s “village-feel.”

New pedestrian islands and footpath connections were also installed, with street lighting to be implemented in the coming weeks.

The $4.7 million project was funded through Regional Roads Victoria.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the roundabout would increase road safety and improve traffic flow in the heart of the town.

Ms Thomas said the intersection was used on average by more than 9000 vehicles a day.

She said roundabouts were proven to “drastically” improve safety at intersections, including reducing the risk of being seriously injured in a crash by up to 90 per cent.

“The community told us Barry Street needed fixing and we have taken action to improve traffic flow and boost safety,” she said.

“With the new roundabout and pedestrian crossing, we have transformed the heart of Romsey into an area that is safer for all road users.”
