Traffic police officers caught more than 170 speeding drivers in the Macedon Ranges in a 22-day holiday road policing blitz.
Speeding was the most common offence detected during the statewide Operation Roadwise, which ran from December 13 to January 3.
More than 7500 Victorian motorists were caught exceeding speed limits in the same period.
A total of 13 drivers were caught drink- driving in the Macedon Ranges.
Of the drivers caught offending in the Macedon Ranges, 16 were disqualified or suspended drivers. Another 13 were unlicensed.
Sergeant Geoff Neill, of the Macedon Ranges highway patrol, said he was hoping for a safer year ahead.
“These figures don’t make us happy at all,” Sergeant Neill said. “It’s always disappointing to see people caring more about getting somewhere quickly then getting there at all.
“We go down this path of education, but there’s only so much education you can give. It’s up to drivers to use this knowledge and slow down.
“It staggers me that people don’t slow down, given the outcomes of speeding being serious injury or worse. I’m really looking towards a brighter year ahead and I have my fingers crossed for a safer new year.”
Other offences in the Macedon Ranges included 21 unregistered vehicles, 12 uses of mobile phones and seven drivers disobeying signs or signals. Five vehicles were impounded and seven drivers caught not wearing seatbelts.
