Redbacks ready for challenge

Plenty is one the line for Romsey with finals spots up for grabs in the Riddell District Football League.

With three rounds remaining, four teams are fighting for three finals spots.

Just four points separates Kyneton, Romsey, Macedon and Melton South, with the latter two teams both having a game in hand.

Redbacks coach Nathan Blair said nothing changes from what they’ve been doing the past few weeks.

“We knew heading into the Melton South game two weeks ago where we were,” he said.

“We have embraced that and it’s one of those things where we’ve put ourselves in a position that we can not lose for the rest of the year.”

It won’t come much harder than this week for the Redbacks, facing the fifth placed Cats.

Blair knows the match is crucial for both slides.

“We know that there are no easy games from now on,” he said. “We’re in the position we need to beat those sides to even make finals.

“We beat those sides, we’ll be good enough to play finals.”

Having accounted for Melton South, the Redbacks made it two in a row as they defeated Lancefield on Saturday.

It was tough conditions as the Redbacks won, 7.10 (52)-2.9 (21).

“It was an ugly day,” Blair said. “I was proud of the boys, especially in those conditions.

“They were clean early on and got crucial goals on the board. After that it was a bit of a fight in those conditions.”

Jack Jedwab and Nathan Rayment kicked two goals each for the Redbacks.

Matt Burkett and Samuel Wilson were named their best.

Blair said with the unpredictability of the weather in the Macedon Ranges, it was nice to know they could win in those sorts of conditions.

With two matches remaining, the other in the final round, Blair said they thought they were coming good at the right time of the season.

“We have won the last two and have to win the next two,” he said. “We are hitting our straps now and we are improving every week.”
