Recruiting for heroes in Sunbury

In the heart of Sunbury, a dedicated team of 60 St John Ambulance volunteers have worked tirelessly to provide care and support to their community.

The team is now seeking 20 more new recruits to join them to support a growing community need.

Among these incredible individuals is Coby McTaggart, a remarkable young member whose 12-year commitment to St John has made up almost half her life.

Having joined as a youth member at the age of 13, Coby was inspired to give back to her local community and was keen to explore a career in healthcare.

Coby is now a registered nurse and paramedic, and as Sunbury’s training and development officer, she is responsible for upskilling and supporting all members to reach their potential.

Her message to those thinking of joining is to come and try something new.

“I would encourage you to further yourself and step out of your comfort zone,” she said.

“Sunbury is an extremely supportive division full of people who enjoy giving back and would love to welcome you.”

As well as making new friends, engaging in leadership opportunities and attending events, Coby has found the clinical experience has helped her to further her nursing career.

Importantly, volunteering with St John is not only for those with healthcare experience, any member of the public interested in helping their community can join.

St John will provide all training, mentoring, equipment and experience to ensure they are successful.

Outside of her volunteer work, Coby is a nurse at a busy public hospital but despite this busy schedule, she never hesitates to devote her time and skills to serve at numerous local events.

In fact, Coby has volunteered an impressive 130 plus hours of her time in 2023.

Together with her fellow volunteers in Sunbury, the division contributed 8814 hours to the community in 2023, which is an astounding figure for the group.

With such a strong need for the organisation’s services in the region, they are currently recruiting for more members to step forward and join the ranks of the Sunbury Division.

An information session will be held on Tuesday, February 13 at 6pm for locals to learn more.
