Police investigate credit card thefts

Police are investigating two separate incidents where victims have been duped into handing over their credit cards.

Police said these cards were then used for unauthorised purchases in Sunshine, Brunswick, Laverton and Werribee.

On May 12, a 74-year-old Sunbury woman received a call from a supposed computer software company representative who advised her credit cards had been fraudulently used and required replacement.

As directed, the woman placed her cards in the letterbox, before they were collected the same day.

The offender then used the stolen cards to purchase jewellery worth $31,000 from a Sunshine business.

On May 15, a 73-year-old Reservoir man received a phone call purporting to be from his bank, requesting he place his credit cards in the letterbox for collection, as it had been used to make an unauthorised transaction.

The victim complied and later discovered the cards had been used to make purchases from a jewellers on Hampshire Road in Sunshine on May 15.

Money was all withdrawn from the victim’s bank account at ATMs in Brunswick, Laverton and Werribee on May 16, with a total loss to the victim in excess of $45,000.

Police have released images and vision of a man they believe may be able to assist with both investigations.

Anyone who recognises this man or with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
