Police focus on phishing

Police are encouraging Victorians to learn more about phishing scams in the last week of Cyber Security Awareness Month.

Phishing is a common scam tactic used by cybercriminals to steal personal and financial information.

Victorians have already lost over $2 million to phishing scams this year.

Police are urging people to protect themselves by keeping an eye out for the tell-tale signs of phishing scams.

These can include something that sounds too good to be true, someone you know behaving in an odd way, being pressured to act quickly, being asked to help out someone with money or being asked to pay in an unusual way.

Emails with a subject line or greeting that is generic or unspecific and that contain strange links or attachments are also common indicators of phishing.
