Romsey residents and visitors alike will be able to tap into the town’s history when the latest element of a streetscape project is put in place.

The Romsey historic sites plaques project, funded by Bendigo Bank and Macedon Ranges council, will install enamel plaques at more than 48 locations, holding a brief description of the historic significance of that place.

Committee members want locals to nominate sites of significance they would like included in the plaques project as well.

Each plaque will have the capacity for a digital interface with the Romsey Online portal, where more extensive historical information will be available.

Romsey Region Business and Tourism Association president Jenny Stillman said the plaques would eventually be a significant resource for Romsey.

“The digital capacity of this project will illuminate Romsey’s rich history to visitors and local community members alike, in a 21st century format,” Ms Stillman said.

“The potential for this as an educational tool is also exciting to the project team members.”

A letter requesting permission from property owners for their properties to be researched and included in the project will be circulated soon.

“We believe the plaques will play a significant role in an economic development, tourism, education and local town pride capacity,” Ms Stillman said.

She said the project will be completed within 12 months of commencement.
