Petitions for more carparking in Gisborne’s township are being circulated by Gisborne Roads and Transport Group in response to calls from residents and businesses.
The advocacy group has placed petition forms in a number of Gisborne businesses, including supermarkets, the vet and cafes, requesting that Macedon Ranges council build parking spaces
and develop a long-term plan for the town.
The petition document specifically calls for “the creation of a long-term parking precinct plan for Gisborne CBD” and the construction of parking spaces in the short term, using the $600,000 the council received from the sale of land to Aldi.
Gisborne Road and Transport Group chairman Russell Mowatt said the petition was started after the group was “inundated with requests from residents, businesses and the many visitors to our town for additional parking spaces within the Gisborne CBD” for months.
Secretary Michelle Minchew said Gisborne’s growth meant people were living further from the CBD and had no choice but to drive into the town for its services.
She said the lack of available parking had “reached the point that something must be sanctioned immediately”.
Ms Minchew said a lack of carparking would eventually lead to businesses suffering with patrons going elsewhere to access services and shops.
