More than 14,000 renewal notices have been sent to Macedon Ranges pet owners, with registrations due on April 10.
Mayor Graham Hackett says dog and cat registration is more than just a legal requirement.
‘‘It improves the chances of a missing pet being returned quickly,’’ Cr Hackett says.
‘‘Registration fees also help provide important pet-related services in the shire, such as animal control, dog attack prevention programs and other community education initiatives that encourage responsible pet ownership.’’
All dogs and cats over three months old must be registered.
