A move to name a pavilion at the John McMahon Reserve in Sunbury after the late Jessy Carroll is a step closer to reality.
Mr Carroll died on November 17 last year after a three year battle with stage four non-Hodgkin’s B-cell lymphoma.
The Sunbury cricketer played for Sunbury United Cricket Club before moving to East Sunbury Cricket Club where he became captain-coach.
Cr Leigh Johnson put forward a motion during Hume’s council meeting last Monday to take to the public for consultation the proposal to name an unnamed pavilion located at the John McMahon Reserve, the Jessy Carroll Memorial Pavilion.
In February, the council wrote to Mr Carroll’s father Tony Carroll seeking his approval to consider naming the pavilion in honour of his son.
“Naming pavilions is certainly not something that we take lightly as councillors, knowing the protocol and the process and the public consultation input,” Cr Johnson said.
“However, on this occasion, I strongly believe that it’s warranted on the case of Jessy Carroll.
“I am confident in saying that Mr Tony Carroll … supports the proposal for the memoralisation.”
East Sunbury club president Mark Wilkins said Mr Carroll had always put the club’s success first. “That’s the person he was,” he said.
Cr Johnson described Mr Carroll as a “great young man” who was loved by many on and off the cricket ground.
Public consultation on the proposal will begin on May 21 for 30 days.
