Hume council has denied a request to name a new pavilion at the Bulla Tennis Club after local man Larry Pelly.

Bulla resident Pamela Allan sent a letter in February to Sunbury MP Josh Bull and Hume deputy mayor Jack Medcraft, “strongly urging” the council to name the pavilion at the club in honour of Mr Pelly’s service and dedication to the Bulla community.

However, under the council’s Proposals for Memorialisation within the Municipality of Hume Policy, the person selected for a memorial proposal must be no longer be living.

Mr Pelly was the president of the Bulla Tennis Club for more than 30 years and had dedicated 34 years to the CFA, including 19 years as the Bulla CFA captain.

He has also been awarded with a CFA life membership and is a member of the Bulla Cemetery Trust.

Ms Allan wrote in the letter that it was an “absolute no-brainer” to have the new tennis pavilion named in his honour.

“He is considered the mayor of Bulla,” the letter said.

“Larry is a selfless and community-minded local who has an extraordinary history of community contribution.”

The council agreed to place a commemorative plaque in the new pavilion to recognise Mr Pelly’s service.

The council will also review its Recognition of Residents Policy by March 2022, to include naming council-owned facilities after living individuals.
