Paramedics called to ‘incident’ at Malmsbury youth jail

Five people were treated by paramedics and one taken to hospital after an incident at the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre on Tuesday afternoon.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics were called to the Mollison Street centre  just after 5pm where they assessed five people. She confirmed one person was taken to hospital.

A  statement released by the Department of Justice and Community Safety said staff at the centre responded swiftly.

“Youth justice staff responded to an incident at Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre yesterday afternoon,” the statement read.

“Emergency response procedures were immediately enacted, and the incident was successfully contained by staff.

“Five staff and one young person were assessed for minor injuries, with one of those staff members requiring further assessment in hospital. That staff member has now returned home.

“Staff are to be commended for their swift and professional response to this incident.

“The incident will be reviewed by the Department of Justice and Community Safety, and referrals made to Victoria Police for investigation.”
