Breast cancer group

From information about mastectomy lingerie to a friendly shoulder to laugh or cry on, women with breast or gynaecological cancers are receiving valuable support through a Sunbury group.

Breast cancer survivor Andrea Casey says many strong friendships have been forged since Sunbury Pink Ladies began late last year, with women feeling free to share their problems and victories.

‘‘It’s just great for these women to come together with others who are going through the same things so they know they aren’t the only one,’’ Ms Casey says.

She underwent three surgeries and radio- therapy after being diagnosed in October 2012 and says she was inspired to start a group in her own town after receiving help from a similar network in Delahey.

Ms Casey says an atmosphere of comfort and confidentiality is key to the new group’s success.

‘‘It’s important to be able to raise issues, to sit and have a laugh or cry, and no one thinks anything of it.’’ The group has about 15 members from Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges, and meets at Sunbury Community Health on the second Tuesday of every month.
