A $300,000 pedestrian crossing on Romsey’s busiest stretch of road will be fully operational by mid next year.
On a visit to the site on Main Street last Tuesday, Roads Minister Luke Donnellan, accompanied by Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas, said the exact location was still being determined.
Romsey Primary School and residents have welcomed plans for signals near an existing school crossing, north of Regan Drive.
The government is working with the school and Macedon Ranges council on the crossing’s design.
Mr Donnellan said Main Street, which forms part of Melbourne-Lancefield Road, was a key route for parents, pupils and people crossing to nearby sports reserves.
Ms Thomas said pedestrian-operated lights would make crossing the busy commuter road much safer for people to get around.
‘‘These new signals will increase road safety for locals, especially school kids,’’ she said.
Macedon Ranges highway patrol’s Sergeant Geoff Neil said that while the crossing project was welcome, there were other problem areas in the growing town.
‘‘It’s certainly an enhancement, but the intersection of Main Street and Barry Street also needs to be looked at. The potential is certainly there for a very serious collision.’’
Work on the Main Street crossing is expected to begin shortly after Christmas.
