Romsey’s main street is set to get a $550,000 revamp.
A makeover of the town centre is on the way to help draw in more visitors and stimulate local business and employment.
The state government announced last week it would spend $400,000 on the facelift as part of the Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund.
Minister for Regional Development Jaala Pulford said the upgrade should help boost local jobs.
“This project will not only create an attractive environment where Romsey’s businesses can thrive, it will be yet another drawcard for visitors to the food, wine and tourist destination,” Ms Pulford said.
Macedon Ranges council will contribute $150,000 to the project, which it developed in conjunction with the Romsey Region Business and Tourism Association.
Mayor Jennifer Anderson said the council was glad to support businesses keeping jobs local as a high portion of residents were travelling outside Romsey to work and shop.
“Local employment is important for the health and wellbeing of our residents,” Cr Anderson said.
Starting later this year, Romsey township will get safer pedestrian access, upgraded historical and interpretive information and signs, new lighting, landscaping and street furniture and bike facilities.
The works are expected to take one year.
The council has said it will work closely with businesses in the area to minimise disruption during the upgrade.
