Good fortune continues to shine on Woodend-Hesket Football Club, with the announcement of a state government grant to ensure new lights for Gilbert Gordon Reserve.
Sports Minister John Eren and Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas visited the Forest Street ground on Wednesday to reveal $100,000 will go to a major upgrade, including AFL-standard lights for football and new floodlights for netball.
Confirmation of the project, partially funded by the club ($70,000) and Macedon Ranges council ($205,000), comes just weeks after the Hawks played their first RDFL game on a resurfaced oval, having played all their home games in Romsey last year.
The council’s draft budget includes another $900,000 for changeroom upgrades.
‘Cockahoop’
President Stuart Braddy said it was an exciting time for the club, which has three senior football and four netball teams. The ground is also home to the recently formed Woodend masters football team and junior programs.
‘‘We’re just cockahoop, to be honest,’’ Braddy said. ‘‘Everyone’s got a real spring in their step now. To have this right after our first game back at home … it’s far more enjoyable and a lot easier on the volunteers.’’
Mr Eren said better lighting would help the club stage more training sessions and attract new members.
‘‘The best facilities inspire more players to turn to grassroots sport, which means healthier communities,’’ he said. Work is expected to begin within 12 months.
