My Place

Georgia Tacey caught up with Riddells Creek Neighbourhood House community engagement manager Mary Giordano to hear more about the house and why she loves to call the Macedon Ranges home.

What’s your connection to Riddells Creek and the Macedon Ranges?

I live in Kyneton and I work in Riddells Creek.

What do you like about where you live?

I love the size and scale of our town in Kyneton, the ease of getting around, the proximity to schools and school friends, as well as the convenience and relative proximity to Melbourne.

Tell us a bit about Riddells Creek Neighbourhood House and what you enjoy most about working there.

I love the Riddells Creek Neighbourhood House because it feels like home! It’s such a warm, colourful and welcoming space, with a beautiful community garden all around. As I approach the house each morning I love seeing the geese around the town, and walking in through the garden observing what is in flower. It always feels good to get here, and I love the happy smiling faces of all of our participants every time they come through the door, as well as the stories they tell and the way we can get to know people from so many different backgrounds and with so many different interests.

Why did you decide to volunteer/work with Riddells Creek Neighbourhood House?

I was looking for some work to do that would still allow me enough time in the week to focus on my business that I run, as well as maintaining my other interests and commitments. Eventually my background in community development led me back to Neighbourhood Houses and this role came up just at the right time for me.

Where’s your favourite local place to spend time?

I love to walk at Black Hill Reserve and also love swimming in the local rivers with my family.

Is there anything you’d change about Riddells Creek or the Macedon Ranges?

Maybe just seeing more vibrant businesses around, and seeing the shop fronts that are currently closed back full of life again.
