Musical takes wild trip to the nineties

The Williamstown Musical Theatre Company (WMTC) is partying like it’s 1999 with its latest production: Cruel Intentions: The ’90s Musical.

Based on the film of the same name and featuring a score made up of hit songs from the 1990s, Cruel Intentions transports audiences back to the final decade of the 20th century and into the manipulative world of Manhattan’s most dangerous liaisons: Sebastian Valmont and Kathryn Merteuil.

Seduced by revenge and fuelled by passion, the two step-siblings place a bet on whether or not Sebastian can deflower their incoming headmaster’s daughter, Annette Hargrove.

Yes, really.

It’s all rather silly, but it’s the sort of fare that pulled in millions of fans around the turn of the century, including WMTC director, Stuart Dodge.

“Cruel Intentions was one of those movies that hit hard for me,” Dodge said.

“I bloody loved it.”

Most of the cast members weren’t even born when the film came out 26 years ago, which Dodge said had caused some confusion in rehearsals due to unfamiliar lingo in the script.

“It’s been so funny for us old buggers on the production team to see the scandalized faces of the cast when some of the more dated terms and words are thrown about on stage.”

Those who grew-up in that era will surely get the references though if they attend one the 10 performances at the Altona Theatre from 7-22 November.
