People mourning the loss of their mum are being encouraged to join Woodend’s Angela Van Dam and daughter Alice, 5 (pictured), for a free memorial tree planting event on Mother’s Day.

Now in its fifth year in Woodend, Landcare’s Trees for Mum gives people the chance to make a positive tribute to their loved one.

Ms Van Dam said when her mother died of cancer in 2008, aged 58, she left a letter asking the family to plant a tree in her memory.

“Every year since her death we have planted trees,” Ms Van Dam said.

“Somehow, doing something positive on Mother’s Day makes the day a tiny bit less painful.”

The Woodend Landcare team will hand out native trees, shrubs and grasses for planting beside the creek at Campaspe Park from 9am-midday.
