Monet really acts the part

Monet dreams of a long life in the arts.

The Woodend starlet (pictured) is set to shine as young Cosette and young Eponine in a local production of Les Miserables next month.

Her biggest roles yet will find her taking the stage in the Mount Players’ production of the classic musical at the Mount View Theatre in Macedon.

Even at nine years old, Monet is something of a veteran.

“My first production was Wind in the Willows when I was three years old,” she said. “I’ve been in a lot of productions since then. I love the costumes and I like that you work hard and you get to show what you’ve learned to the audience.”

Monet has had lead roles in productions of Peter Pan, Mary Poppins and Alice in Wonderland with Sprout Theatre Company.

“To prepare for a role, I just watch the movie, then I think about how the character might be feeling and I try and do the same,” she said. “I don’t know who I want to be like, but I just know that I want to act when I grow up.”

Mum Danielle Slade said that landing a part in Les Miserables had been one of Monet’s goals.

“Monet started dancing at three and singing at six,” Ms Slade said. “Then through that we realised that she has a love of theatre, so we started auditioning for shows.

“When Monet started in theatre, there was a list of characters that she said that she would really like to play and she’s had the opportunity to play a lot of them. Monet is very committed to her craft.”

Monet will perform in 16 sold-out Les Miserables shows next month.
