Mind how you go

A mother and daughter are reaching out to young people struggling with mental health and autism through a new social group.

Riddells Creek 18-year-old Chloe Galt-Smith and her mother Amanda Murray are working with Riddells Creek Neighbourhood House to set up a support group called Colourful Minds.

“I’ve suffered from severe depression and anxiety since I can remember and when I was 16 I was diagnosed with autism … and have always wanted a safe space, group or meet-up where I can be with people like myself or at least those who understand,” Chloe said.

“Sadly, there seems to be a lack of these types of support groups.

“The feedback that I’ve received from others about setting up the group has been really positive and I’m very excited to meet other people who struggle with the same issues as me.

“For someone who suffers from mental health issues or autism this may prove beneficial.”

Colourful Minds is aimed at people aged 13 years and older and their carers and will focus on the positives, strengths and good days that participants experience, Chloe said.

“Socialising takes a lot of effort and can be very tiring for some, which is why it’s encouraged to simply bring a book to read, a game to play, something to draw on – anything that’ll keep you busy and you can just sit and enjoy being in a safe, pressure-free space.”
