Sunbury All Abilities Basketball has celebrated its 20th anniversary.
The club marked the milestone with a big celebration and presentation night for all the players, to commemorate 20 years of inclusive basketball played in Sunbury.
Volunteer Sean Law said it was a special day for all players and volunteers, some of whom had been there since the very beginning back in 2005.
“We had two of our founding volunteers, Melita and Royston came down and it was a really great moment for a number of our players who some of them have been around for the full 20 years and some for 10 and 15,” he said.
As part of the awards portion, they awarded players with the Melita Murphy Award, which is given to a player who showcases great teamwork and supports everyone on the court, and the Royston Barns Award, which is given to a player who keeps trying to improve each week, in recognition of their founding volunteers.
Mr Law said it was a huge achievement for the club to reach 20 years.
“I reflect on the purpose of the organisation, and thinking back to 20 years ago, … for those players who have been around for that time, it represents a community that’s focussed on supporting them to play basketball but also to socialise and to develop life skills, not just necessarily basketball skills, but making friends and organising yourself to be on time and play and have your uniform ready,” he said.
Mr Law said the team regularly plays at Boardman Stadium on Wednesday nights, and any players with disability are welcome to join.
