The shock death of a friend was the catalyst for a Sunbury photographer to design a project that will help mental health charities.

Matt Gleeson, who has taken tens of thousands of pictures at punk rock shows and promo shoots over the past few years, will release his new coffee table book, Passion 4 Punk, at North Melbourne’s Last Chance Rock N Roll Bar on April 16.

‘‘My friend’s death last year hit me particularly hard,’’ Gleeson says.

‘‘You start to ask what can you do in response to that. This is what I came up with.’’

Nine bands and a crowd of close to 100 people got together in October to raise almost $2000 for printing costs, meaning 100 per cent of the initial print run will go to charities.
