A Sunbury mum is inviting up to 100 guests for afternoon tea with a twist next month.
Melissa McDowell is hosting an ‘afternoon teal’ event on February 27 at Pitruzzello Estate to raise money for Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.
Ms McDowell says she and the Teal Magnolias, her fundraising group, aim to teach people about the disease and raise the profile of the charity Ovarian Cancer Australia. “I really want people to know about ovarian cancer because whenever you see people fundraising for cancer, it’s usually for breast cancer,” she says.
“Everybody recognises the pink ribbon, but they don’t necessarily know that teal is the international colour for ovarian cancer.
“They also don’t know that many more women with breast cancer survive than those with ovarian cancer.
“In Australia, about 1400 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year. Within five years, 80 per cent of those women will likely die.”
The Teal Magnolias hope to raise at least $5000 through ticket sales and donations to the morning tea.
Attractions on the day will include entertainment by Sunbury musicians, a photo booth, massages and psychic readings.
Tickets are $60 at www.ticketebo.com.au/sunburyafternoonteal
