Macedon Ranges recognised for preventing family violence in emergencies

The community satisfaction survey showed residents want better sealed roads.

Macedon Ranges council has been recognised for its efforts to prevent an increase in family violence following emergencies.

The council was highly commended at the 2017 Resilient Australia Awards last month for its Prevention of Violence Against Women in Emergencies project.

Mayor Jennifer Anderson said it was wonderful to be acknowledged for the work.

“This is an important achievement that reinforces how important it is that we all work together and support our local communities when impacted by emergencies,” Cr Anderson said.

“Councils play such an important role in helping local communities prepare for, and recover from, emergencies.”

Macedon Ranges council’s project aims to raise awareness of research that shows there is an increase in the incidence, prevalence and severity of family violence following an emergency, both in affected communities and among the families of emergency responders.

The project also provides resources to support affected communities and volunteers, and is supported by Victoria Police and Country Fire Authority.

The annual Resilient Australia Awards showcase often unseen work that strengthens community disaster resilience across the country.
